The Book Drunkard Literary Festival

Join us at Wooden Sticks on November 1, 2022 at 7:00 pm as Governor General Award-nominated poet, Rob Winger, engages Jesse Thistle in conversation about his beautiful and moving collection of poems and stories.

Fans of Jesse Thistle’s extraordinary debut From the Ashes have already had the pleasure of reading his poetry, which is sprinkled throughout this bestselling memoir. In Scars and Stars, he digs deeper into the poetic form, which is especially close to his heart.

JESSE THISTLE is Métis-Cree, from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and an assistant professor in Humanities at York University in Toronto. From the Ashes, his memoir, was the top-selling Canadian book in 2020, the winner of the Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writer Prize for Nonfiction, Indigenous Voices Award, and the High Plains Book Award, and also a finalist for CBC’s Canada Reads. Jesse won a Governor General’s Academic Medal in 2016, and is a 2016 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholar and a 2016 Vanier Scholar. A frequent keynote speaker, he lives in Hamilton, Ontario, with his wife, Lucie, and is at work on multiple projects, including his next book. Visit him at JesseThistle.com.

ROB WINGER is the author of three previous collections of poetry, including Muybridge’s Horse, a Globe and Mail Best Book and CBC Literary Award winner shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Award, Trillium Book Award for Poetry, and Ottawa Book Award. He lives in the hills northeast of Toronto, where he teaches at Trent University.
