An Evening with John Irving [SOLD OUT] (2019)

Doors to the Music Hall will be opening at 6:30 pm for book sales and refreshments. We will have a limited quantity of the 40th anniversary edition of The World According to Garp, signed by John Irving. These are available on a first-come first-served basis. John will not be signing copies of any books that evening. We respectfully request that you do not ask him.

Guests celebrated an evening with one of the greats. John Irving took the stage to share passages from his work-in-progress and talk about his many other celebrated books. To salute this auspicious occasion, Uxbridge’s brand-new craft cider house, Slabtown Cider Co., created a unique offering (called The Cider House Rules!) to launch The Book Drunkard Festival and toast the first festival’s headliner, John Irving.

It’s no surprise that we love Anne of Green Gables! So, we were very excited to host an afternoon of children’s activities for Anne fans like us. Lucy Maud Montgomery’s granddaughter, Kate Macdonald, first delighted children with a cooking class. Kids learned how to make raspberry cordial and discovered the story behind the beverage. Kate was also happy to sign copies of her Anne of Green Gables Cookbook. We then invited everyone to meet Kelly Hill, author and illustrator of Anne’s Colours and Anne’s Numbers. Kelly showcased her Anne-inspired embroidery and fabric crafts. With Kelly’s help, children created and their own Anne and Gilbert paper dolls to take home!

It Can’t Happen Here (2019)

It Can’t Happen Here is a 1917 play based on the 1936 Sinclair Lewis’ novel of the same name. It chronicles the rise of a populist US politician who is elected president on a platform of patriotism and traditional values and a promise to restore the country to prosperity and greatness. Once elected, the new president establishes an authoritarian regime which outlaws dissent, centralizes power and responds to protests with violence.
