Calling all little illustrators! Do you have a favourite fictional character? We want to see your rendition of your fave character! We invite children of all ages to draw the character that inspires them and bring it to Blue Heron Books from now until October 24, 2019. Your child’s artwork will then be placed on display at Blue Heron Studio during the Illustrator Showcase on October 26th.

It Can’t Happen Here is a 1917 play based on the 1936 Sinclair Lewis’ novel of the same name. It chronicles the rise of a populist US politician who is elected president on a platform of patriotism and traditional values and a promise to restore the country to prosperity and greatness. Once elected, the new president establishes an authoritarian regime which outlaws dissent, centralizes power and responds to protests with violence.

Doors to the Music Hall will be opening at 6:30 pm for book sales and refreshments. We will have a limited quantity of the 40th anniversary edition of The World According to Garp, signed by John Irving. These are available on a first-come first-served basis. John will not be signing copies of any books that evening. We respectfully request that you do not ask him.

Celebrate an evening with one of the greats. John Irving takes the stage to share passages from his work-in-progress and talk about his many other celebrated books. To salute this auspicious occasion, Uxbridge’s brand-new craft cider house, Slabtown Cider Co., has created a unique offering (called The Cider House Rules!) to launch The Book Drunkard Festival and toast our headliner, John Irving.

It’s no surprise that we love Anne of Green Gables! So, we’re very excited to host an afternoon of children’s activities for Anne fans like us. Lucy Maud Montgomery’s granddaughter, Kate Macdonald, will first delight children with a cooking class. Kids will learn how to make raspberry cordial and discover the story behind the beverage. Kate will also be happy to sign copies of her Anne of Green Gables Cookbook. We will then invite everyone to meet Kelly Hill, author and illustrator of Anne’s Colours and Anne’s Numbers. Kelly will showcase her Anne-inspired embroidery and fabric crafts. With Kelly’s help, children will create and take home their own Anne and Gilbert paper dolls!
